Chapter (14)
~ Sheet Ghost

“It’s time to get ______ back to work! More jobs means more money for your families.” Us points and practices other gestures to the empty living room and then looks up. Outside the large bay window a small child is playing with some sort of hoop accompanied by a larger child who is making swinging movements with a crooked stick. Beyond the giant lawn sailboats are criss-crossing fluidly like the surface of a shark tank. There are storm clouds where the sky meets the water.

Us rolls up the paper speech and throws it onto the marble coffee table. It falls such that it looks like a jaunty hat on one of the face-like patterns of the stone. Us walks into the dining room and taps distractedly with the pointer finger and middle finger of the left hand; it sounds like a marching pattern. Us does this for about 15 seconds. Us walks through a coat closet of sorts. Someone of has put a white towel on a hook; it looks remarkably like a standard Halloween sheet ghost.

Us enters a red carpeted room with floor to ceiling books. It smells like wood polish and cigars. Pushing a volume that reads “The Secret Lives of the Martyrs” — the adjacent panel of books, on the right, opens like a door. Us steps through into the darkness and closes the “door”, feels for the lock and turns it. Us switches on a light. This illuminates a downward stone staircase that turns out of site. Echoing from below can be heard the sound of bubbling liquid and the chirping of a bird. Before descending the stairs us looks at the left pinky nail realizing it was cut to short.
