Chapter (12)
~ Lonely Groups of Seagulls

The front left wheel of the shopping cart wiggles making it inclined to roll in a left direction. Us finds this annoying but since all the stuff from the fruit and vegetable isle is already in, it seems more annoying to swap out the cart. Us looks at a display of wine bottles and thinks generally of marriage — the flowers, the gathering of friends, etc.

Without warning all the lights in the store go out. An alarm is triggered; it is an electrical sounding noise not a bell.

In the distance Us thinks other alarms can be heard.

Over the intercom a calm voice says “Due to the storm we are experiencing a loss of power. We will be closing early. We apologize for the inconvenience.” The clerk or manager drops the microphone causing a loud crack and subsequent feedback. A bit of laughter can be heard before being cut off.

Outside it is very dark. There are only about four other cars in the parking lot. Us walks past a homeless man feeding some sort of bread to a lonely group of seagulls. Us makes eye contact with the man and shrugs in a sort of world weary way. The man mumbles something that Us thinks sounds like “sour grapes.” Us sees a person with a flashlight on the distant right aiming it high into a tree.
