Notes

1 The gray wolf's expressive behavior is more complex than that of the coyote and golden jackal, as necessitated by its group living and hunting habits.

2 Clamping on the muzzle with bared teeth is a dominance display.

3 When wolves are together, they commonly indulge in behaviors such as nose pushing, jaw wrestling, cheek rubbing and facial licking.

Chapter (11)
~ Fearing Wolf’s Grin

“Just a little more towards orange, needs to be less red; a bit more yellow and a bit of white.” Us squeezes some paint out of the tube and energetically tries to find the new color on the surface. Us adds a bit of white. “Not too much now.” Us mixes the viscus material a bit more. “Lovely. Lovely.” Us draws the second “lovely” out in a mock-sleezy way lowering chin to chest. Us lifts the brush, dabs and soaks up the new color and slowly traces a shape on the giant vertical canvas.

Us puts the brush down and steps back, one arm across the stomach propping the other with hand on chin. After a bit of time Us walks over to the ornate table rummaging among the mess of papers and books for the cigarettes. Us finds the pack. Us wipes a crystal tumbler on the tail of the stained, pale gingham shirt and pours a third of it full of whiskey. Us takes a large sip and a deep inhale from the cigarette.

Us walks over to the large digital mirror on the primarily empty studio wall. Us gets in close and grins like a snarling wolf checking for any errant tobacco pieces, satisfied, Us then bows ceremoniously to the reflection careful not to spill the drink. Us turns away from the screen. The reflection disolves and returns to a calm snowy village scene, probably somewhere in rural Japan. A figure with a colorful parasol is slowly making its way across the screen through the snowy drifts.
