Chapter (5)
~ Ducks in a Row

Us noticed that the cup of coffee and cream, that US was stirring, was almost the exact color of the muddy puddle collecting around the door jam, as well as the paint on the door and that of the taffeta blouse Us is wearing. Calmly musing this over, Us taps the gold ring four times on the coffee cup and looks involuntarily back at the rain dripping off of the eave and to the blackness beyond. The rain always makes a pleasant sound on the waxy leaves of that type of tree. Us closes the door and walks to the living room, and sits down. Us turns on the tv. The first thing that comes on is the old movie channel. There’s mother duck and her chicks, single file behind her, walking to a pond. Us unbuttons the taffeta blouse, then crosses one leg over the other. The stockings make a swishing sound. The phone rings from the purse hanging off one of the kitchen chairs. Us gets up and walks back to the kitchen, and pulls the phone out. “Hello?” “Hey, are you almost home?”

“The rain is starting to let up no?” “Oh, I don’t care.” “That’s terrible.” “Well I’m here, just relaxing.” “Take your time.” “Love you too.” “See you soon.”
