water into different shapes and a wind-powered water pump.3 Under the Medicis, fountains were not just sources of water, but advertisements of the power and benevolence of the city’s rulers. Chapter (1)~ The Forest Fountain Us entered the forest from the north side, through the meadow, at about 4½ hours before sundown. Obviously, to say, “the north side” is ridiculous, because Us knows the “north side” of the forest, to be neither straight nor distinct. But, if recall serves Us well, Us will remember there is that small clearing, which at some point started to be referred to as “the meadow” — and, there is a distinct path there. Us loves how the branches of the oak and pine parallax with smooth beauty in the canopy above. The smell is peaty and sappy; the path is sometimes spongey, but in some areas something like hard-packed gravel. Us thinks that these areas without moss are caused by sunlight coming through at certain times during the day. After walking for about 2 hours Us sees that there are stones bordering the trail and mostly gravel underfoot. After walking for another 10 minutes, the path rises up a distinct grade. When Us gets to the highest point, Us is stunned to see a very large, round, marble fountain in an unwooded circular area. The marble is grey and blue, and the fountain is round with concentric tiers, the smallest on top. Blue-ish water is spilling down, from one tier to the other until splashing in the large pool at the bottom. Us jogs down to the rim of the fountain. The rim is about knee high. Us is unsure of how the fountain is powered, or where the water generates from. But Us is happy to sit on the ground and leaning back against the low marble wall and listening and smelling and seeing, in the last remaining hours of daylight. Chapter (2)~ Ancient ElevatorsThe doors to the ancient carpark elevators scrape open; it is night, and Us is in a lonely and bad part of the city. There is a wind that Us thinks smells unhealthy. The wind wraps and presses a dirty page of newspaper around one shin. Us removes the paper with thumb and pointer finger, and disgustedly releases it. The wind takes it immediately, rolling and skipping it casually down the pitted black street. In the alley on the right, there is an oil drum with a robust fire; Us thinks this is a bit trite for such a scene. There is no one around. Walking a little further there is a distinct smell of meat cooking. Us shuffles along toward the smell, since it seems to be on the way to “the dock” (where the meeting is to happen). After moving along a bit, Us seems to be right on top of the smell. Us looks over the&nbsp;shoulder-height fence along the sidewalk. No grill, no&nbsp;evidence of a kitchen or the like. There is only one&nbsp;distinctive object: a large, white, solitary flower,&nbsp;blossoming from a single stalk of cactus. Us thinks the&nbsp;flower looks “weird,” and out of place. Us looks&nbsp;at it closely, and touches one petal; it is not fake,&nbsp;apparently. Us thought Us overheard that ______ was still missing, which made Us terrified and made Us feel like Us was going to vomit. After coming to, Us was laying on the gurney, off to the side of the excitement and terror. Us watched little flecks of burned debris falling all over. Us looked at the blue sky beyond the haze and at the flakes collecting on the jacket and the gray straps that secured us to the contraption. Us heard a rumbling that sounded like a massive engine grinding to a halt, as well as screams and yells. Us weakly looked over and saw only approaching blobs of smoke. Us collapsed back looking in the opposite direction at the side street. He told Us that the true way to learn how to draw, is to see the muscles below the skin, which seemed weird and crazy since the art was of buildings and not people. The first thing that comes on is the old movie channel.&nbsp;There’s mother duck and her chicks, single file behind her, walking to a pond. Us unbuttons the taffeta blouse, then crosses one leg over the other. The&nbsp;stockings make a swishing sound. The phone rings from the&nbsp;purse hanging off one of the kitchen chairs. As well, the tables will&nbsp;be collapsed and rolled to the corner near the chairs. “Today Us is talking to you wearing two hats.” Us emphasizes “two hats” by seemingly imitating&nbsp;balance scales.&nbsp;The lights are out. The&nbsp;blinds have been pulled down. The blinds are&nbsp;semi-transparent. Behind Us, on the wall is a projection on&nbsp;a screen; Us is controlling the images on the screen with a&nbsp;wireless device. The poured concrete floor reflects slightly&nbsp;the image on the wall.&nbsp;It is hard to say what the images&nbsp;on the screen are exactly.&nbsp;Outside the room “L” is talking on the phone. “Now the room is being used for lectures? That’s a lot of food for such a small group.” Back in the other room Us is still talking. Us&nbsp;seems to have taken on the air of a preacher. Through the far window Us sees the freight train still pinging and thumping along the track. It has been going by for over a minute. During these moments when alone in the house many feelings and thoughts pass through Us — slight nostalgia, familiar vague stresses, little plans for gratifying little desires. Walking past the bedroom Us jumps in surprise. In the closet mirror Us has mistaken a reflection of one of the wigs for a stranger sitting on the bed. The feeling of panic is gone almost as fast as it arrived but a more subtle feeling of general gruesomeness sets in. Us goes down to the kitchen and pours a glass of water. Us walks out to the driveway and sits in the ratty chair and looks down at the belly protruding from the bathrobe. Two morning doves are weaving and pecking nervously about 3 yards away. Chapter (8) ~ Mound in Rain Us kicks along the sand haphazardly; occasionally looking from aging toes out to the gray morning horizon. Us hopes to find a couple of small things to put above the sink — a little project. A ball rolls over followed by a large wet dog. Us reaches out to pet it but is too slow. Us looks to see how close the owners are and if they saw the misfired gesture. Us sees a vague couple on a far mound of sand welcoming their pet excitedly. Us with familiar frustrated thoughts feels the sand or crumbs at the bottom of the jacket pockets. In the parking lot us glances up and down unable to find the car. A passerby in a polo shirt and plaid shorts asks about a missing dog, but us is worried and preoccupied. Us quietly mutters “no” and spots the blue sedan over the man’s shoulder. In the car after Us buckles the seatbelt Us puts both hands on the steering wheel but doesn’t start the car — 10:30 and 2:30. Through small gathering raindrops Us sees the man in the polo shirt talking to the couple on the sand mound. The man is using his hand to make what looks like parentheses or a bowl shape in front of the couple; they are shaking their heads back and forth. Chapter (9) ~ This or That Path Us has to push harder. Us needs to fiercely block thoughts about “fate” and “luck” and keep sharp. It feels distinctly like the choice between two paths. “Drive her right side! She can’t hit it there! Only one more time!” Us hits it with full power. The result is clear and and the coliseum erupts with the noise due to a home town winner. Us falls on both knees, clenches hands into tight fists and begins to cry. Us feels no pain, just transcendental joy. After a very short time Us is surrounded by reporters. Us ignores them at first and asks for water. The questions are answered automatically (humble sentences peppered with specific points about strategy). Us loves the feeling of proof, of winning — seeing it reflected in everybody’s eyes. Us is ravished by exertion and this unique satisfaction. One of the reporters has a patch on their shirt which Us thinks looks like a Japanese mask with gold braids and buttons for eyes. Us pauses absently not able to make sense of it and asks the man to repeat the question. “Are you going to go for the record? Through the large window a sharp light flashes like a shimmering lure on _______’s cheek; late day sun bounced from the chrome blinders of a passing horse. ______ leaves without another word. Us remains seated and watches ______ as he drives away, absorbed into the city traffic. On the surface the restaurant has returned to normal — but Us can feel the whispery, sidelong glances. “Other’s people’s drama is such a windfall for light conversation” Us thinks. Deciding to get something else, Us flags down the waiter. He rolls over in an air of sanctimony. Through a resigned sigh Us orders: “A bottle of Endrake oil and two slib farsons.” “Very good.” The waiter speeds away to punch in the request. Us returns to looking out the window. Above the darting pedestrians on the other side of the street, a sign is flashing; it’s blinking a slogan: “Reboot! Renew! You deserve it!” “The colors are pretty for such a trite adage” Us thinks without commitment. Farther up Us sees some movement in a frosted window. Moving the glance downwards, onto the interior sill of the window Us sees a small laptern beatle scuttling along the ridge. Us thinks about how many smaller creatures must be moving around everywhere, moving on every surface. The waiter returns and sets the order down. The Endrake oil helps Us to relax, but still returns to nervously smoothing the table cloth with near glitch level constancy.
